Nursery World Awards 2008: Organisations - Nursery of the Year

WINNER: Cowgate Under 5's Centre, Edinburgh

Cowgate Under 5's Centre is a truly wonderful nursery. All aspects ofits work are informed by deeply held philosophy and principles. Thestaff, led by inspirational head Lynn McNair, are reflectivepractitioners who respect and appreciate each child's individuality.They foster the development of high levels of considerate independence,allowing space and time for uninterrupted play indoors and out, enablingchildren to build on their interests across all areas of learning. Linkswith the wider community include an enterprising forest school in thecity centre.

Imaginative use is made of the purpose-designed site, which isthoughtfully resourced and beautifully presented. Every day startswarmly and purposefully with bread-making; the healthy meals includefood grown in the garden. Children participate in domestic routines, andare encouraged to take increasing levels of responsibility. They aregiven opportunities to express, explore and extend their thinkingthrough constructive interaction with each other and insightful adults,who know how to support their rounded development appropriately.Children as well as parents contribute to profile records.

Awareness of ecological issues draws families in to the wide range ofrecycling undertaken in the nursery. Provision for parents, carers andvisitors is carefully considered: staff are generous in explaining theirapproach both in principle and practice. The Centre is a living exampleof excellence.

VISIONS OF COMMITMENT

The four nursery finalists are very different, but they have someimportant points in common. All are led by visionary managers whobelieve in inclusive practice and show total commitment to their work.They all work to reassure parents and keep them in touch with theirchildren's progress from the start. Staff are valued and encouraged intheir personal and professional development and children are consultedalongside their parents on future developments. Active learning is a keypart of every day with each setting doing their best to give childrenplenty of opportunities for out of doors. All the nurseries involvethemselves in training and disseminating effective practice, and showsocial responsibility through their support for particular good causes.Each entry also demonstrated they have earned heartfelt appreciation andpraise from parents for their work.

The Dimson Day Nursery is commended for its outstanding dedication tooutdoor learning. It encourages the full involvement of children andfamilies, with a wonderful learning environment and a healthy approachto risk. The staff at this small private nursery show great innovationand help to generate a sense of excitement among the children.
