Nursery World Awards 2009: Resources - Birth to Threes - Tried and tested favourite

WINNER: SEQUENCE BOOKS, COWGATE UNDER 5'S, EDINBURGH

The Cowgate Under 5's Centre in Edinburgh offers an education designedto meet each child's individual needs. The ethos of the nursery is verymuch centred on spontaneous play and it supports each child'sdevelopment by following a play-based curriculum.

With this in mind, the nursery has developed a resource called sequencebooks, which allows children to express themselves freely and developtheir creativity. The sequence books are a step-by-step guide todifferent activities that children can do at their own pace and in theirown way.

There are more than 15 titles, including 'How to make banana bread','How to make playdough' and 'How to make paper'.

Lynn McNair, head of the centre, says, 'As children select theexperiences of paper making, mixing paint or making a krispie cake, sochildren create, sometimes on their own and at other times with theirfriends.
