SNOW BUSINESS

Early years settings across the country made the most of the recent snowfalls.Sledding was popular at Kaleidoscope Day Nursery in York (top) and Leeman Road Playgroup at St Barnabas C of E Primary School in York (middle), where even a spare tyre was called into service. At St George's Preparatory School in Boston, Lincolnshire (bottom), children used spray paint to create colourful pictures in the white stuff.

A snow Gruffalo, or 'Gruffasnow', appeared in the garden at Wharfedale Babies nursery at Wharfedale Montessori School in Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire (below), made by children who took inspiration from their favourite book by Julia Donaldson.

At The Old School House Day Nursery at Sancton in the East Riding of Yorkshire children enjoyed making footprints in the snow.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Littlebrook Nursery in West Drayton, Greater London, and London Early Years Foundation's Lutton Street Community Nursery in Westminster marked Valentines Day on 14 February. Children at Littlebrook Nursery held a themed fun day to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, while Luton Street Community Nursery organised a 'love and happiness' day.

IN AWE OF OZ

Children at Little Acorns nursery in Rothwell, West Yorkshire, celebrated Australia Day on 26 January by learning about the country's animals, wearing cork-stringed hats and having a go at playing the didgeridoo.

BEAR NECESSITIES

A topic on bears by the lower foundation class at Redland High Junior School in Bristol was enlived by the Bristol Rugby Clubs mascot, Brizzley Bear. The children showed Brizzley their own teddies that they brought to school for a show-and-tell session. Pictures of Brizzley that the children drew are to be included in the Bristol Rugby Match Day programme at the end of the month.

LITTLE TWITCHERS

Alphabet House Day Nursery in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, got the binoculars out ahead of the RSPB's Garden Birdwatch weekend on 28 and 29 January. The children made good use of the nursery's brand new bird watching area, and discussed ways they could help birds and other garden wildlife through the winter months. They also made bird feeders and other treats to take home and put in their own gardens.

TALK TO THE ANIMALS

Elvetham Heath Day Nursery and Pre-School in Fleet, Hampshire, enjoyed a visit from Zoo Lab, provider of animal handling workshops, who brought some exotic animals for the children to meet. Deputy nursery manager Kelly Smith said, 'The children loved handling the cockroach and counting the legs on the millipede. But by far their favourite was the tortoise.

This was a great way to introduce young children to unusual animals.'
