NVQs to include working with refugee children

The Early Years National Training Organisation hopes to devise national occupational standards for carers working with children of asylum seekers and refugees to be included among the standards for early education and childcare. EYNTO deputy director Sue Owen said it had begun to work on the standards in response to demand from the sector. 'People have found themselves being faced by large numbers of very disorientated children over the last two years,' she said.

EYNTO deputy director Sue Owen said it had begun to work on the standards in response to demand from the sector. 'People have found themselves being faced by large numbers of very disorientated children over the last two years,' she said.

The EYNTO has obtained European funding under the Leonardo da Vinci programme to pay for exchange visits with three experienced host organisations in European Union countries who are working with young children from refugee, asylum seeker and traveller groups, Pavee Point (Ireland), Mutant (Netherlands) and VBJK (Belgium).

Two months ago three groups of six British early years experts visited the host organisations to exchange good practice, visit local projects and discuss the knowledge and skill elements of working with such children. Mrs Owen said she hoped their research would contribute to the development of a specific new national occupational standard for early years education and childcare.
