Developing story lines and recognising local routes CHILD-INITIATED

CHILD-INITIATED

Recreate routes from home to the setting to increase awareness of the locality.

Resources

Photographs, street maps, local A-Zs, aerial photographs of the local area, old maps and atlases that can be cut up and drawn on, globes, writing and drawing resources, scissors, glue and tape.

Preparation

* Take photographs of street signs and other local features that are familiar to the children. Think carefully about how the built environment may appear through a child's eye and photograph from their eye level.

* Draw plans of the setting, workrooms, toilets, garden and your own route to nursery. Encourage other adults to draw plans and maps as well and to sign them, so that the children can see how plans and maps might be drawn from different perspectives.
