PAINTED GLASSES

Glass painting is something that all ages can have a go at. Choose a beer glass, wine glass or tumbler to suit dad's favourite tipple.

You will need: glass paints, available from art and craft shops (check that they are suitable for use by young children); thin brushes; drinking glasses.

What to do: start off by checking that the glass surface is clean, dry and free of grease. Encourage older children to plan their design before they start painting. Patterns tend to look better than a scene, although children who are good with a paintbrush could try a simple motif such as the emblem from dad's favourite football team. Suggest a design made up of dots, lines and triangles, working in rings around the body of the glass.
