Our value to SEN

I am writing on behalf of a group of special needs assistants in a school in Doncaster who have been fighting for a pay rise since February 2001. Often we are left in charge of a class of about eight children, all of whom have severe special needs, and are expected to 'teach' them on a regular basis. We also do paperwork including children's profiles and portfolios, are consulted regarding children's reviews, and liaise with the professionals visiting school, and are relied on greatly in the classroom situation.

With inclusion well on its way, it will be interesting to see if we are going to be recognised for our worth and paid accordingly. At the moment we special needs assistants are still on Grade 1 and earn less than if we all left to stack shelves in Tesco's.
