Taking advantage

I work in a primary school where nursery nurses and classroom assistants work alongside each other. I am very fortunate that our staff work closely together as a team, but we are constantly aware of the fact that while the classroom assistants are being asked to contribute more, their pay has not increased. Likewise our nursery nurses are being asked to take on more special educational needs work without any extra financial recognition for the work they do. While our nursery nurses continue to work with groups of special needs children, special support assistants are being paid more for providing the same work - and sometimes working with fewer children.

It would seem that once again the powers that be are relying on the professionalism and dedication of our staff to make sure that our children have a safe, caring environment within which they receive an education appropriate to their needs.

On a different note, although early years education has altered greatly over the past few years, we still have trouble coming to terms with the expectations of those working in Key Stage 1 and the need for children in the Foundation Stage to develop in a play-orientated environment.
