Parents taking action to save nursery

Parents have formed an action group to challenge Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council's plans to relocate an 'outstanding' nursery school by the end of July. Last month, the council said the period building housing Hollywood Park Combined Nursery Centre was not 'fit for purpose' and services could be split across the borough (News, 29 March).

Last month, the council said the period building housing Hollywood Park Combined Nursery Centre was not 'fit for purpose' and services could be split across the borough (News, 29 March).

Hollywood Park Action Group was set up in response and has pledged to carry out its own assessment of the maintenance work required, because the parents' group believes the quote of 86,000 the council has been given is grossly inflated.

The group has also set up an e-petition against the relocation on the 10 Downing Street website.

Parent governor Jo Brewerton said, 'We use the building every day and no-one can understand why the building is not fit for purpose suddenly. The council has already written to parents whose children were supposed to start at Hollywood Park in September and many have not accepted their places, so the nursery school is already losing children. It's closure, when they are saying re-location. Staff are very despondent and some are already looking for other jobs.'
