Participate National Arts conference

Art had children at heart at the Participate National Arts conference on 9 March, organised by Children in Scotland. The Wester Hailes Education Centre in Edinburgh played host to teachers, childcarers, children and young people attending 30 workshops, many of which were led by children. Children in Scotland arts development officer Deirdre MacMahon said, 'No one could fail to be inspired by the range and quality of arts activities represented at this conference. It gives children and young people an opportunity to show us, on their terms, what makes participation in the arts work for them.' The National Youth Choir of Scotland hosted a session on child development through singing and understanding of musical notation through pictorial methods. Caber Enterprises introduced the Apple, Carrot, Banana method which makes creativity in music possible for children of different ages, and delegates learned about the Hi-Arts three-year project recently launched in the Highlands and Islands.
