Pay rise for after-school staff is victory for quality

The Transport and General Workers' Union has secured a 13.3 per cent payrise for workers at a Glasgow after-school club, bringing their pay up to more than 5 an hour. The pay award will increase basic rates at the Somerston club from 4.65 to 5.25 an hour, and will be backdated from January.

T&G regional industrial organiser Tony Trench said that the after-school club was run by a voluntary management committee, and following the appointment of a new committee in January this year he and colleague Margaret Ann Jones had argued successfully for a pay rise for the staff.

Mr Trench said that the union would regard 5 per hour as the minimum deserved by any childcare worker, but in this case the fact that staff were qualified or working towards qualifications made their low pay particularly unfair.
