People over the age of 60 now outnumber those aged under 16 in the UKpopulation, at 21 per cent and 20 per cent respectively. The results of the 2001 census released last week put the total population at 58,789,194. The statistics show that the highest proportion of children aged under 16 is to be found in Derry, Northern Ireland (26.8 per cent or more than one in four people), while the London borough of Newham has the highest proportion of children under the age of one. The UK's most densely populated area is the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea with 13,244 people per sq km, in contrast to the eight people per sq km in the least densely populated area of the Scottish Highlands.
