The topic suggestions are ideal for inspiring relevant work among children. However, I am less than impressed by the story 'Alien numbers'. As I read the narrative I envisaged the possibilities for furthering language development and imaginative work, but then came to the end of the story where Emily was using her 'fifth hand' for 'picking her nose'.
Couldn't a more imaginative ending have been found that would have presented positive possibilities for the use of an extra hand? I realise nose-picking is enjoyed by many children and is a topic that some carers wish to talk about to limit the habit, but in my opinion a good story was spoiled by its inclusion. To alter the story's ending is a possibility but, as the illustration supports the text, that is difficult to do satisfactorily.
