'Playgroup on ice' builds confidence

Proving that you are never too young for the fun and exercise of skating, Dundee Ice Arena is running classes for children aged from 18 months to five years. Skate coach Debbie Briggs says, 'It is all about getting them moving on the ice.' In what has been described as 'playgroup on ice', young children are encouraged to play with trikes, trolleys, balls, hoops, skittles and children's hockey sticks. Toddlers can jump inside one of the big plastic buckets and be pulled around the ice, while others can enjoy a push on a tractor. The more confident can skate alongside their carers. They can bounce and even kick a ball to each other.

There are plenty of helpers around so parents and carers do not have to go on the ice if they don't feel confident. Often the adults are more nervous than the children. A first-aider is always on hand, although Debbie points out that skating is very safe. 'Children can wear a helmet if they want. We simply say they should wear gloves and be warmly dressed.' The children can wear double runners or single blades. 'This is a fun event,' says general manager Simon Newman. 'A lot of children are quite frightened to go on the ice. This gives them confidence.' As the children progress they receive certificates and awards.
