(Photograph) - Prime minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie presented Catherine Sara, a health visitor from Peterlee Sure Start (left), with Unicef's Baby Friendly award in recognition of the care and support given to breastfeeding mothers and babies. Breastfeeding rates in Peterlee, Co Durham, have more than doubled to 53 per cent of mothers with babies in two years. Andrew Radford of Unicef said, 'Peterlee Sure Start has set an example that good care and improved breastfeeding rates can be achieved in areas of social deprivation.' Unicef aims to increase breastfeeding rates nationally by six per cent by 2006. Its global Baby Friendly programme gives parents information and support in care for babies. Breastfed babies have been shown to enjoy greater protection from gastroenteritis and respiratory infections, and their mothers have a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
