Proposals for a new law in Scotland protecting a mother's right to breastfeed her baby

Proposals for a new law in Scotland protecting a mother's right to breastfeed her baby in a public place have won the support of Unicef UK. The Breastfeeding (Scotland) Bill to be considered in the next session of the Scottish Parliament recommends that any action taken to prevent a mother from breastfeeding her baby in any public place where children are otherwise permitted should be made illegal. Andrew Radford, programme director of Unicef UK's Baby Friendly Initiative, said, 'The health of Scotland's children can only be improved as a result. Those businesses which have prevented or discouraged mothers from breastfeeding their babies in public areas have effectively increased the chances of those babies falling ill.' Elaine Smith MSP is due to launch a public consultation on the proposals this week.
