The DCSF is consulting ahead of a Child Poverty Bill which will givelegal backing to the Government's promise to end child poverty by 2020,and mean that it will be held to account on its progress towards thetarget.
In Ending Child Poverty: Making It Happen, the DCSF outlines four areaswhich it believes are key to tackling child poverty: getting moreparents into work; providing financial support that matches families'requirements; improving children's life chances; creating safe, cohesivecommunities where children can thrive.
The Government pledged to test improving the financial incentives forparents who want to work for a few hours a week without losing benefits,and paying for childcare required when parents try out working for under16 hours a week. The consultation is calling for views on other options,such as requiring local authorities to set a specific local childpoverty target or introducing a duty on local public bodies to considerchild poverty when planning and carrying out any mainstreamactivities.
