Praise for profiles

I think the Government's decision to introduce a profile scheme to sum up the learning and progress of children at the end of the Foundation Stage in England (News, 20 September) is a sensible and a feasible idea, especially when taking into consideration that children are still settling into the reception class at seven weeks. Seven weeks after starting school is far too early to be testing children. They have enough to learn in a new environment without being tested, too.

Having the profile scheme look at all of the practitioners' observations and comments is a step in the right direction, for it will also put less pressure on parents to consider that their child has 'failed' within the first seven weeks of full-time education.
