Pre-school probe

I am studying for a PDA in Childcare and Education at Jewel and Esk Valley College in Midlothian. For my research project I am trying to find out if there is a place for a traditional playgroup. I am the playleader of a traditional playgroup. It is managed by a volunteer committee, has paid, qualified staff, is funded by fees, fundraising and grants, and provides a stimulating environment for children aged from two years and three months to four years.

I am the playleader of a traditional playgroup. It is managed by a volunteer committee, has paid, qualified staff, is funded by fees, fundraising and grants, and provides a stimulating environment for children aged from two years and three months to four years.

Each session is planned, with its main emphasis on play and children's social and emotional development. We have a full complement of children and a healthy waiting list, as this is not the case for all playgroups and several in my area are struggling or have closed.

I want to hear from anyone who works in a playgroup, about its struggles or successes, or if the playgroup is considering changing to an early years learning centre. Are playgroups a necessary part of the journey from toddler groups to nursery? What do parents want from a playgroup?
