Qualified vision

In reply to the letter 'Graduate workforce is an illusion' (12 February), the news story the writer refers to ('New vision for child services', 11 December) was a brief synopsis of the Early Childhood Forum's detailed response to the Green Paper Every Child Matters. This response was formulated by the 45 member organisations of the Early Childhood Forum, representing many of the practitioners whose skills and enthusiasm are essential to quality early years services. The early years profession suffers from low pay and low status. We believe this situation urgently needs to be rectified if the sector is to attract and retain high-calibre staff. One way to do this is to develop qualifications that value the skills and knowledge involved.

The early years profession suffers from low pay and low status. We believe this situation urgently needs to be rectified if the sector is to attract and retain high-calibre staff. One way to do this is to develop qualifications that value the skills and knowledge involved.

For this reason, we are keen to explore the possibility of developing a workforce that demands a range of qualifications, including a core graduate qualification to which any practitioner can aspire. The Early Childhood Forum will be meeting next month to continue debating these important issues.
