Quotas set in new recruitment drive

Men, people from ethnic minorities, the disabled and women aged 19 to 40 are being targeted as potential childcarers in the Government's latest recruitment campaign. A 4m advertising campaign, which began in England last week, aims to recruit around 180,000 new childcarers over the next three years from these groups of people. Catherine Ashton, Sure Start minister, described it as 'an important step in building a stronger childcare workforce' because a high-quality and affordable early years education was 'vital to the future economic and social well-being of our country'.

She said, 'Childcare workers know there is a great deal of satisfaction in seeing how they can make a difference in children's lives. It is a demanding and rewarding career and we need to draw on a wider pool of talent to ensure that children continue to get the best quality childcare.'
