School opens for children of travellers

A new primary school in Belfast is taking most of its pupils from the travelling community. St Mary's Primary School in Divis Street was opened last week by Northern Ireland education minister Martin McGuinness, who said, 'St Mary's is a unique school which has an important and special place in the education of traveller children in Belfast. I am determined to address the educational needs of all our children and I would like to thank all those involved with St Mary's for their efforts in enhancing the delivery of education for traveller and settled children attending the school.'

St Mary's Primary School in Divis Street was opened last week by Northern Ireland education minister Martin McGuinness, who said, 'St Mary's is a unique school which has an important and special place in the education of traveller children in Belfast. I am determined to address the educational needs of all our children and I would like to thank all those involved with St Mary's for their efforts in enhancing the delivery of education for traveller and settled children attending the school.'

St Mary's is a maintained school with 67 children aged four to 11, most of whom are from the traveller community. All the children receive free school meals, compared with the Northern Ireland primary school average of just under one child in four.
