Scotland: Six-point rating introduced for all providers

Childcare providers in Scotland will be rated from one to six under a new grading system to be introduced by the Care Commission next April.

The national regulator is introducing the system for every care servicein the country. Nurseries, playgroups and childminders will all beawarded marks in three to five different areas, presented in regularat-a-glance report cards and backed up by detailed reports.

The separate areas are care and support or information, environment,staffing, and management/leadership.

Grading inspections will be carried out from April 2008, with the firstreports published on 1 July 2008.

Jacquie Roberts, chief executive of the Care Commission, said, 'We havelistened carefully to the views of care users, their families andfriends, and the message was clear - they wanted a simple, quick andeffective way to rate care services in their area.'
