Scotland's birth rate has fallen

Scotland's birth rate has fallen dramatically in the past 20 years and is lower than any other country in the UK, according to the Annual Review of Demographic Trends released by the Registrar General John Randall last week. The population decline is set to continue and is due to more deaths than births, rather than because more people are emigrating. Scotland's population stood at 5,054,800 at 30 June 2002, a level last seen in the first half of the 20th century.
