Self-employed 'can benefit from vouchers'

Hundreds of self-employed parents may be unaware that they can make extra savings on childcare by signing up for a voucher scheme, a Manchester nursery has warned.

Haidee Langtree, the manager of Victoria Park Day Nursery, part ofXaverian Sixth Form College in Manchester, told Nursery World thatparents who own their own businesses could be missing out on a 'doublebenefit' of childcare vouchers.

She said, 'If a parent is self-employed by their own limited company, then he or she can apply for childcare vouchers to the value of 2,916 a year - but the company also gains by not having to pay NationalInsurance contributions, so you can potentially gain on bothfronts.'

A spokesperson for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs confirmed thatself-employed parents could be eligible for childcare vouchers and thattheir business could benefit from tax and National Insurance relief, saying, 'If a parent has set up their own company and is then employedin that company, they may be able to obtain childcare vouchers. Throughthe voucher scheme, there is a tax and National Insurance exemption onchildcare costs of up to 55 per week per employee.'
