Six nurseries become beacon schools

Six nurseries - five of them in rural areas - are among a further 166 beacon schools in England to be created by the Government in its drive to raise education standards. In the latest batch to be awarded beacon status from September, 105 are primary schools, 44 secondaries and 11 are special schools, bringing the total to 1,150 nationally. Ivan Lewis, minister for young people, said, 'Beacon schools help raise standards in other schools by sharing knowledge and talent. The programme has already helped many schools to benefit from advice and experience shared by some of the best schools in the country.' Ofsted and the National Foundation for Educational Research have both praised beacon schools for acting as a lever for change and encouraging schools to review practice. The six nursery schools are Caverstede in Peterborough, Filton Avenue in Bristol, Grandpont in Oxfordshire, Sandyford in Staffordshire, Lincoln St Giles in Lincoln and The Lawns, which is in the Windsor and Maidenhead local education authority.
