Nursery owners must not let quantity take priority over quality in an expanding childcare market, says Michael Thompson, managing director of nursery chain Child Base It came as no surprise to read that the market for day nurseries has grown another 8 per cent to March 2001, meaning an increase of 20,900 places (see 'Disbelief greets fall in daycare statistics', Nursery World, 2 August).

I suspect this is related to the number of nurseries actually registered, and there is no doubt in my mind that at least the same number again are being built or in planning. The numbers are bound to rise further in the next three years with the increase in provision brought about by the investment in places through the Neighbourhood Nursery Initiative.
