Spotlight on ... Mary Harris

Management Provision
Position: Retired nursery nurse, George Dent Nursery School, Bishop Auckland, County Durham

How does it feel to have spent your entire career at the same nursery?

I've thoroughly enjoyed my working life in the nursery. I can't think of anything that I would rather have done. Some people would think that it must have been mundane, but it was far from boring. There were always changes coming along.

What changes have you seen since you started 43 years ago?

When I first qualified, I did my training in the local education authority nursery, which had two-year-olds. The Government wanting to bring two-year-olds back into local government establishments isn't really a new thing, because that was happening in the nursery in 1967. One of the biggest changes for me was that when I started at George Dent, all of the children upstairs had full-time places. In the early 1980s, the demand was such for nursery placements that we had to change to part-time to give more children the opportunity to have the nursery experience.
