Spotlight on... Ruth Coleman

Name: Ruth Coleman

Position: Nursery assistant, Saint Martin's School, Solihull and charityworker at Kampala Children's Centre, Uganda

- When did you first travel to Africa?

I first went to Uganda in 2001 when I was 16. Since then I have beennannying and working with children and making regular trips back.

- What have you been doing out there?

Kampala Children's Centre was established in Wakiso two years ago and isthe vision of a local church minister. At the moment, it looks after 60orphans in houses, each with a 'house mum'. We provide the basics offood and clothes, but it's about giving them security and discipline aswell, caring for children age two to 13 and will soon have facilitiesfor babies too. Around 40 per cent of the children are from northernUganda where a war has been going on for 17 years. Thousands of childrenare night commuters, at risk of being captured to be child soldiers.
