St Clements Primary School

(Photograph) - Children starting primary school in Dundee this August will be able to brush their teeth at school every day - and those of a large-mouthed puppet, writes Joyce Reid. Each school in the city is to receive toothpaste, brushes and a 'toothnology' box of resources promoting good dental care. The scheme was launched at St Clements Primary School, where class teacher Lesley Smith, who has trained as a toothnologist, said, 'The children love the puppets, especially when they rinse their mouths and spit out water.' containing puppets - whose teeth can be brushed properly using outsize toothbrushes - books, worksheets and posters. It is hoped that this imaginative approach will help to prevent the appalling levels of tooth decay now found in young Scottish mouths. Councillor Jill Shimi said, 'The city council is using Quality of Life funding to ensure that young children can get brushing habits established early to try to ward off dental decay.'
