Dental care is essential in children from a very young age. With 40 per cent of all children under five suffering from the pain of tooth decay, nurseries have a key role in caring for children's teeth and teaching children good dental hygiene habits.

The Stop The Rot campaign asks nurseries to implement a tooth-friendly routine. Participating nurseries are asked to do three things that are all simple but crucial ways of preventing tooth decay. These are:

* sack the sugar

* beat the sweets

* eat, drink and brush Manufacturers put a huge amount of hidden sugar into our foods. Nurseries are advised to check the labels on packaging for hidden sugars and levels of sucrose. Sucrose is the worst type of sugar. It binds to teeth, accelerating the decay process.
