* A nursery in Millom, Cumbria, has raised more than 1,000 in an appeal. With fees only covering the cost of staff wages, Stepping Stones Nursery relies on grants, donations and fundraising to keep going. The 36-place nursery has been open for 40 years. It plans to use some of the money to replenish stocks of toys, books and equipment.
