Posy Simmonds knows how to distil ideas, and in this book she combines speech bubbles and text with perfect symmetry. There is sufficient detail in the comic strip-style illustrations to make the reader feel they can really get under the skin of the story, while other images are dynamic enough to jump off the page.

There are hordes of tiny mice for readers to count as they help themselves to the bakery's store of chocolate and nuts. We can even choose our favourite mouse clothes (pink polka-dot skirt for me). When the mice help the cat to get his own back on exploitative human owners, we can count every one of the artificial mouse-tails they have knitted for their trick.
