The Wild Girl
by Chris Wormell
(Jonathan Cape, 10.99)
Carefully poised text and earth-muted shades in the illustrations make a nice impression in this book. The Wild Girl has only her wolf for company.
She sometimes calls out over the mountaintops, but no answer is returned.
The wolf, however, does hear an answer. The understated text leaves the reader to work out that this is his echo.
I saw this as a measured story tinged with regret and then completeness. My child reviewer had some different views, 'It's an exciting story. It's hard to live in the wilderness without any clothes or much food - they had to hunt for food in the water.'
