Oh, Ducky, A Chocolate Calamity

by David Slonin

(Chronicle Books, 9.99)

Children will love to pore over this exuberant story. The action-packed pictures are fluid and feature some imaginative spaces such as inside the pipes of a chocolate machine.

The story in a nutshell: Candy works the chocolate-making machine. He has a duck that gets stuck in the machine, forcing the factory owner to dive down the pipes to release it. He's successful, but breaks the machine, and there's a great picture of chocolate whooshing into the factory, where it assumes the form of a three-headed monster. Everyone and everything is covered in chocolate, including the duck, and this gives the factory owner an idea - duck-shaped chocolates. These are a great success.
