Strip councillors of award, says trade union

The trade union Unison is calling for a London local authority to be stripped of a good service award because it says councillors reneged on a nursery nurses' pay agreement. Union representatives and nursery workers met councillors from Ealing last week to discuss the delayed implementation of a new pay and grading structure for 46 staff in the council's four nursery centres (News, 15 March). But they found social services representatives were all away attending an award ceremony.

Ealing council won the Social Services Team of the Year, presented by Local Government Chronicle.

Brian Blake, Ealing Unison convenor for the social services department, said, 'Giving Ealing council this award is like giving the captain of the Titanic the sailor of the year award.'

The staff will meet today (22 March) to discuss a ballot on strike action.
