Sure Start head replies to EYDCPs

The future role of Early Years Development and Childcare Partnerships was the subject of a meeting last month between the director of the Sure Start unit and 60 local authority early years co-ordinators from all over England. The meeting with Naomi Eisenstadt was called by the Local Authority Early Years Co-ordinators Network to discuss Delivering for Children and Families, the Government's inter-departmental review (News, 14 November).

Ms Eisenstadt addressed concerns that partnership working might become a casualty of Government decisions to give responsibility for the National Childcare Strategy targets to chief executives. She said that clearer local authority accountability would still leave room for partnerships to work in a planning and advisory capacity.

Some co-ordinators also reported difficulties in releasing funds for needs such as Area Special Education Needs Co-ordinator posts if these were not clearly ring-fenced and channelled through the partnerships.
