'Take nursery schools' route to reading'

The principles of good practice in nursery schools must not be ignored when teaching children to read, the director of Early Education has said in response to the final report on the Rose Review, which advocates synthetic phonics. Anne Nelson said that those responsible for the revision of the primary national strategies and the development of the Early Years Foundation Stage should look at the Ofsted inspection reports for maintained nursery schools.

Anne Nelson said that those responsible for the revision of the primary national strategies and the development of the Early Years Foundation Stage should look at the Ofsted inspection reports for maintained nursery schools.

She said, 'None of the HMI visits made by the Rose Review team were to maintained nursery schools. But of those inspected since the introduction of the new system in September 2005, 41 per cent are outstanding and 41 per cent are good. There is a wealth of evidence from schools which do not use a formalised narrow programme but make notable achievements in improving attainment.'
