The action plan we really need

Last week, we hosted a lecture by prime minister Tony Blair on tackling poverty and social exclusion. There are indications that Mr Blair has been listening to the evidence we shared with him.

He acknowledged that help for excluded families must be combined with the fight against child poverty. We know that anti-poverty measures in themselves cannot solve all problems. Tailored help and early assistance for parents are also essential. But without further progress towards securing adequate incomes, such measures are unlikely to work.

Our audience warmed to Mr Blair's positive support for more investment in preventative work during children's early years. This needs to be available through mainstream service providers, including the voluntary sector.
