Nursery World - The Big Picture

A programme at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool tackles the language development gap in under-sevens.

The gallery is running free sessions for families as part of Storywalkers, which will include songs, stories, messy and sensory play and craft activities designed to support language and literacy skills.

Research by children’s literacy charity Beanstalk suggests 40 per cent of children leaving primary school in Liverpool are unable to read to the required level, compared with a national average of 34 per cent.

Paul Khan, deputy director of education and visitors at National Museums Liverpool, said, ‘Through fun activities, we can help to develop a love of reading, extend children’s vocabulary and support the development of motor skills, for mark-making and writing.’
