Reviewed by Marian Whitehead, language and early years consultant This is a vibrant, colourful and inviting publication from the Curriculum Partnership, an informal grouping of the larger subject teaching associations. The link with school subjects could spell danger for an early years curriculum, but my fears were dispelled by the holistic, play- based approach and the reputation of the well-known editor.

The book has a substantial editor's introduction explaining the pedagogy behind the project. I would urge practitioners to read this carefully. Some of the issues around child-initiated play and adult-directed activities are teased out with great clarity and authority. The 12 themes, or topics, that make up the book spring from such varied and stimulating starting points as 'Incy Wincy Spider'; a basket of fruit from Kenya; a birthday; The Adventures of Ratty Tatty by Helen Cooper. Every themed section includes guidance on key focus areas, resources, outcomes, creating the learning environment, productive questions, vocabulary, children's voices, teacher reflections and assessment.
