The free Asian Child Protection Helpline

The free Asian Child Protection Helpline run by the NSPCC has just celebrated its second anniversary after handling more than 1,500 calls since its launch in November 2001. A quarter of the calls concern family relationships, with a further 20 per cent of callers asking for help, advice and support on the emotional, physical, mental and sexual abuse of children, while 10 per cent of calls are about forced marriages within the South Asian communities. NSPCC helpline manager Owais Khan said, 'It has been a very busy couple of years for us, and what is clear is that the children of South Asian heritage need to be protected in the same way as other children.' All of the helpline staff are trained social workers and counsellors of South Indian heritage. They can take calls in Bengali/Sylheti, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu, as well as English. For an English-speaking Asian adviser, telephone 0800 096 7719. The helpline is open 11am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. It can also be contacted via e-mail at helpline.asian@nspcc.org.uk.
