The Government has given

The Government has given its response to the recommendations for the early years from the Commons Select Committee on Education and Employment (Special Report, 25 January 2001). The response, received when Nursery World was going to press, includes an agreement that levels of qualifications should be raised. It says, 'It is our intention to build on the new national standards by raising overall levels of qualification over time. We are looking to establish a working group to look at qualification levels in the medium and long term. In particular, we intend to create a new senior early years practitioner role and help more sector workers to obtain qualified teacher status. In setting future targets for training, we will consider ... moving over time towards a requirement for setting leaders to be at graduate level.' But the Government stood firm on its decision to allow childminders to smack children and smoke in their presence.
