August Enjoying your garden

Enjoying your garden

August is the month to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labours. Just weed, deadhead flowers, and keep the usual eye out for pests (slugs and snails, blackfly on beans, whitefly and caterpillars on brassicas, and greenfly on tomatoes).

Inspect courgettes, runner beans and peas daily and pick as soon as they are ready. Do the same with soft fruits, lettuces, radishes, rocket, chard and spinach, while they are still young, juicy and fresh. If leafy plants are left, they will 'bolt' and run to seed. When harvesting a cabbage, cut it off by slicing through its stem, then make a cross cut in the stem and wait for a second crop of four baby cabbages to grow! Pick sweet peas daily.
