The right approach

Parents of children with special needs may have experienced many different kinds of rejection. It is important to be welcoming. 'It is good practice to gather as much information as possible about any child before she or he starts,' says Shubi Raymond. 'The principle is the same for a child with a special needs, except that you will be getting information from other professionals as well as from the parents.'

Approaching parents when you think their child is having difficulties is 'a very difficult area,' concedes Shubi Raymond. 'The principle we have to go on is that we work together with all parents. The key thing is to share information and to listen to what the parents say. For example, a child may not be talking in the nursery and you may be worried, but after meeting the parents you might find out that things are fine at home. Other times you may feel the parents are in denial. You have to show sensitivity and honesty, and work from where the parents are now, without antagonising them. It is important to reassure them you want to work with them in the best interests of their child -not just apply a label. What you are doing is sharing a concern.'
