Threading carefully

07 September 2005

Threading, or lacing, may have an old-fashioned image but it is invaluable in improving hand-eye co-ordination. You can also use it in sequencing and storytelling if you provide a wide variety of materials Threading beads

Threading beads

This is the classic threading activity, but now there are plenty of variations on this theme to keep children stimulated while improving their dexterity.

The Perlino threading and sequencing set is a game in which children are required to thread beads to make a snake. There are two levels of difficulty involved in making the snake, as the children can either thread the beads on to a string and then place them on the snake board, or thread through the small holes on the snake board. The set comes with one snake, measuring 40 x 6cm; 30 beads in yellow, red and blue; six exercise cards with suggestions for threading; one colour die; instructions and a cotton storage bag. Priced Pounds 19.50 or 89.95 for five sets from Asco.

Soft lacing beads from BrightMinds are made of durable foam so they are soft to the touch but long-lasting. There are 48 beads in the set, in a selection of shapes, colours and sizes, and two laces that have 'long pointy ends' to make threading easier. The beads come in a plastic storage jar, priced Pounds 14.95.
