The second of our new regular columnists, Helen Penn, says teacher training must be relevant and, most importantly, fun I was sorting through my books last week and re-discovered one by Sybil Marshall. She was a legend in the field of education, an unqualified teacher, who for 20 years ran a one-room school in rural Cambridgeshire for children aged four to 11.

I was sorting through my books last week and re-discovered one by Sybil Marshall. She was a legend in the field of education, an unqualified teacher, who for 20 years ran a one-room school in rural Cambridgeshire for children aged four to 11.

In her late forties she went to university and took a degree. Then she became a teacher trainer, first at Sheffield, then Sussex University. Ms Marshall was also editorial consultant for 'Picture Box', the famous ITV programme for young children that ran for 23 years.

Well into her retirement, aged 80, she wrote three best-selling novels. She died last year.
