Undermined skills

I have worked as a nursery nurse in the private sector for 13 years and am worried about the approach being taken to childcare workers, particularly nursery nurses. We are now being pushed out of the school environment by the Government's initiative to train up as a classroom assistant anyone who wants to work with children. My local education authority said recently that it did not know how long nursery nurses would have a future in its schools due to the fact that schools can employ two minimally-trained classroom assistants for the cost of employing one highly-trained nursery nurse.

As a profession we are being pushed into poorly-paid jobs or taking on a lower-level job in the same field. Where will our future lie if politicians refuse to acknowledge the only long-term nought-to-eights childcare qualification there is, and give us the recognition we deserve?
