Welsh Assembly wins disability policy powers

New devolution powers will allow the Welsh government to create its own policies and procedures for disabled children, a Children in Wales conference heard last week.

The conference, Working Together from the Start, was focused on early intervention and support for disabled children and their families.

Children in Wales is a founding partner in the Disabled Children Matter Wales campaign, which was launched in September. It aims to make sure the Welsh Assembly government, local authorities and local health boards make disabled children a priority over the next three years.

Children's minister Jane Hutt made the keynote conference address and highlighted the government's commitment to disabled children and 'equality of opportunity'.

Ms Hutt said, 'Only a few days ago, the first law-making powers in many centuries were passed to the Assembly in this crucial area. The new powers will enable us to develop a distinctive approach that meets the needs of all learners with special educational needs in Wales.'
