What money?

I am incensed by Lynne Oates' comments about private providers who only run nurseries to make money (Letters, 24 February). If I had wanted to make money, the last thing I would have done was to open a nursery. I have been a member of the National Day Nurseries Association for more than 15 years and have yet to meet any nursery owners who are making huge profits.

I currently employ 23 staff, of whom 17 are childcare workers, 13 of whom are qualified to level 3 and the other four are qualified to level 2 but working towards level 3. Four of my staff are under 21 years of age (one is still a full-time student who works with us in the holidays), and my oldest employee is 61. My manager has been with me for 16 and a half years; eight staff have been with me for 12 years plus, while another four are approaching four to five years (two having returned after having their own children). All the staff undergo regular in-house and external training and are committed to the welfare of the children in their care.
